Hi, I’m Georgina
I have always enjoyed baking, even from a young age.
My biggest inspiration when it comes to baking is my nanny. Growing up I was surrounded by my nans cakes and bakes and was often found helping her with her baking. During my childhood (and even now) nanny would make a birthday cake for me and my cousins every year! Some of my favourite memories were made sitting in Nanny’s kitchen and looking through cake books, choosing which cake we wanted that year. I would love to be able to carry on this tradition with my own children one day.
In 2017, after leaving high school, I went on to study level 2 Bakery & Patisserie at Reaseheath College, where I learnt lots of new skills and gained in confidence. In early 2018, I decided to set up my own small cake business from home, ‘Baked by G’. I began taking on a few orders to people in my village, mainly focusing on birthday cakes and cupcakes, continuing to grow my skills and confidence. I continued my studying at Reaseheath, where I also completed level 3 Bakery & Patisserie.
After this, in 2019, I started working towards my foundation degree in Bakery & Patisserie Technology, again at Reaseheath, as part of the University of Chester. During my first year of uni, Covid-19 hit and we went into lockdown. Throughout lockdown I was still attending online lectures and continuing with my degree, whilst also putting a lot more time and effort into my new business. I began taking on more orders and gained a lovely clientele. Uni finally reopened and I went back to complete my degree, achieving a distinction. After finishing my degree I spent most days baking and growing my business.
In October 2021, me and my best friend Abi, who also ran her own cake business, decided to take on our first big adventure whereby we joined forced and opened up our own cake shop in Chorley, Lancashire! We opened ‘The Northern Cakery Co ‘in the November, with help from family and friends. The business had its highs and lows, although working with your best friend everyday is always fun and I loved every day at work and learnt so many new skills! Unfortunately, at the end of the three year lease, and with rising costs, we made the difficult decision to close the shop in September 2024. I went back to baking from home and fulfilling orders from my loyal customers who I continued to bake for while in Chorley, as well as trying to build my local clientele.
Which brings me to now… my next big adventure! Opening up another shop by myself is a huge step for me and I am so excited for the future of Greenway Cakes! Credit needs to be given to my amazing mum and dad, who have worked so hard to help me achieve this goal, and also to the rest of my family; my sister Charlotte, Grandma, Nanny and Grandad, who have all offered so much support and belief in me. I couldn’t have made this next step without them!
